Following the ISIS terrorist attacks in Brussels in March, members of the Carmel Clay Public Library board asked if the library might want to consider holding a presentation about Islam and ISIS.
“The board saw a post about the Faith Presbyterian Church and Ahmadiyya Muslim Community holding a program, and they wondered after the Brussels attacks if this was something we might be interested in,” CCPL director Carolyn Goolsby said. “We got our heads together here and decided yes it was certainly something we would want to present at the library.”
The hour-long event, ISIS is not Islam, will be presented at 7 p.m. May 16 in the CCPL program room. Goolsby said many people have misconceptions about Islamic teaching and ISIS.
“We wanted to have a discussion about what the differences are and how it affects us in the U.S. today,” Goolsby said.
David Carlson, a professor in religious studies at Franklin College, will focus on what Americans need to know about ISIS. Carlson’s book “Countering ISIL: The Power of Spiritual Friendships,” was published in February 2015. He has given many speeches on ISIS/ISIL since July 2014.
ISIS stands for Islamic State of Iraq and Syria and is also being referred to as ISIL, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
Muzaffar Ahmad, a volunteer with Muslim community, will speak on the teachings of Islam and what it is really about.
Ahmad, a Pakistan native who lives in Fishers, is a member of the Center for Interfaith Cooperation board. Ahmad has spoken at many churches and universities throughout Indiana.
“He’ll talk about different nationwide efforts to help non-Muslim distinguish true Islam from extremism,” Goolsby said.
