A case was registered against a Christian man on Thursday who was arrested by the Sheikhupura police for allegedly posting “blasphemous” text on social media.
District Police Officer (DPO) Sarfraz Khan Virk told reporters that some residents of Nabipura locality lodged a complaint with the Factory Area police station against Usman Masi, a resident of Nabipura locality alleging he had posted blasphemous text on a social networking website. However, he did not delve into details regarding which social networking website the text was posted on nor the text itself.
An FIR was lodged after Ahsan Hasmat, a resident of the area, filed a complaint against the suspect at Factory Area Police Station, Inspector Iftikhar Ahmed said. “Police officials are yet to arrest the suspect,” he said.
Initial investigations showed that the blasphemous messages were posted last year by another man, who was now living abroad, the DPO said. No complaint was filed against the man living abroad, he added.
The DPO said the social media account through which the blasphemous text was posted had been dormant for the last eight to nine months. He said the detailed investigation was continuing to verify the account details.
According to reports, police were also looking into a dispute over teasing of girls following which the complaint against the suspect was lodged.
