USA: Oshkosh Mosque sponsors blood drive Friday | Umair Ahmed

The average Joe cannot seem to separate the heinous actions of barbarians from the peaceful teachings of the faith. Islam places paramount emphasis on the sanctity of life (Quran 5:33), freedom of religion (2:257) and compassion (4:37).

Fifteen years. In a few days, it will be the 15-year anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy, a painful day which has become the catalyst of so much that has transpired since then. Every day, every terrorist act, every shred of vile rhetoric, brings increased scrutiny to the faith of Islam and its teachings.

As a Muslim living in the United States, I have become accustomed to seeing increased negativity toward Islam and Muslims in our culture and media. The average Joe cannot seem to separate the heinous actions of barbarians from the peaceful teachings of the faith. Islam places paramount emphasis on the sanctity of life (Quran 5:33), freedom of religion (2:257) and compassion (4:37).

This is why the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community believes in engaging the community to show what true Islam is all about. In partnership with Red Cross, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community of Oshkosh will host a blood drive Friday, Sept. 9, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Oshkosh Mosque to honor and remember the victims of 9/11. Visit redcrossblood.org to schedule an appointment. A pint of blood can save up to three lives. Now is the time for action, for actions speak louder than words. Come join your fellow Muslims and Americans in saving lives.
