Karachi, Oct 29: At least five people were killed and dozens left injured in a terror attack in Pakistan’s Karachi city on Saturday. The terrorists, reportedly belonging to Sunni extremist group Sipah-e-Sahaba, also calling themselves as Ahl-e-Sunnat-Wa-Jamaat (ASWJ), indiscriminately fired at the participants of a procession, marking the 40th day of Ashura. The participants of the procession were all members of the minority Shia community. The motorcycle-borne assailants fled away from the spot after firing gunshots.
Chief Minister of Sindh Province, Murad Ali Shah, has instructed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to submit a detailed report on the matter. He has also ordered the IGP to impose blockades across the city and nab the militants at the earliest. The procession was targeted in Nizamabad region of Karachi.
The majlis was set adjacent to the police station, however, according to eyewitnesses, there was an evident lack of police cover while police claims that the organizers kept them uninformed, and therefore, adequate security arrangements were not in place.
“Organisers did not inform the police about the majlis,” Karachi police chief AD Khawaja said while speaking to Dawn News.
Members of Shia community had organized the procession to mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad. They came under the radar of Sunni extremist group Sipah-e-Sahaba, which has repeatedly condemned the practices of Shia community, calling them biddat (innovation).
Sectarian violence has reportedly increased in Pakistan over the years. Members of Shia and Ahmadiyya community have been targeted by the Sunni terror groups. Earlier in the month, 1 child was killed, whereas, 15 left critically injured due to a bomb blast in Karachi outside Dar-i-Abbas Imambargah, a Shia prayer house.
