Pupils and staff of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Secondary School at Kissy Dock Yard, Freetown have used their inspirational parlance ‘ABAZA’ to praise the efforts of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in reaching out to school children. This happened in ‘Meet the School Campaign’ sensitization programs by the ACC. Separate meetings were held for Junior and Senior Secondary Schools.
The focus of the meetings was to raise awareness among young people on the nature, causes, effects and solutions to the endemic corruption in Sierra Leone. The ACC hopes to enlist the support of children in their fight against corruption.
Addressing staff and pupils of the two segments of the school, Public Education Officers of the Commission, Junisa Sankoh and Magnus Bendu emphasized the need for an understanding of what corruption is and how it affects all of us, and especially the standard of education and the motivation to study. They reasoned in both meetings that when we are fully familiar with the very heavy toll corruption has on us as a people, and as learners and teachers, the willingness to join the fight is enhanced.
Staff were encouraged to adhere to the traditional educational expectation of the teacher being ‘Loco Parentis’ (the teacher taking the place of the parent) in all activities of the school. Bribery, in particular, was vehemently discouraged whether it is coming from parents, teachers or pupils. The audiences were informed that in order to enhance effective service delivery in the educational sector and other MDAs, the Pay No Bribe campaign initiative was introduced in Sierra Leone with the support of DFID.
The 515, toll-free phone line was announced and participants were encouraged to report any incidence of bribery or corruption within the SLP, education and health sectors, EDSA, Guma Valley and SALWACO. The ACC is piloting the 515-phone line for MDAs within the Western Area, Bombali, Bo and Kenema Districts.
Pupils were urged to study hard and avoid cheating of any kind as those practices form the breeding ground for corruption in the nation. They were informed of their role in the fight against graft, which is basically to “Reject, Resist and Report” corruption to the ACC.
In her vote of thanks, Bushra Kamara, a member of ACC Integrity Club and pupil of the Junior School hailed the efforts of the ACC in partnering with the young generation to fight corruption. She promised that pupils of Ahmadiyya will do all they can to reject, resist and report all forms of corruption both in the school and their communities. She led the Abaza hail shout for the ACC and for the Ahmadiyya.
The meetings were followed by questions and answer sessions and the Information, Education and Communication materials were shared through the Principals of the schools.
