It was Asma Sabahet’s third time hearing “His Holiness” speak, and she says it won’t be her last.

“The first time I heard him speak, I was overcome with tears. He brings bundles of love, joy and brotherhood to Canada when he visits, especially in the streets of Peace Village, where the local Ahmadiyya Mosque is located,” said Sabahet, who is a Grade 12 student at Maple High School in Vaughan. “No matter how long I get to see him, it’s just not enough,” she said. “When you have a love for the caliph, it is wonderful to hear his address, just to be in the same room as him.”

On Friday, Oct. 28, Sabahet came to hear Hazmat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, who is commonly referred to as “His Holiness”, give a keynote speech titled 'Justice in an Unjust World' at a peace symposium in the Tribute Recital Hall at York University, Keele Campus.

Ahmad, who is the fifth Caliph and Worldwide Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at, was introduced by the Chancellor of York University, Greg Sorbara.

“In Canada, we celebrate diversity and encourage freedom of thought,” said Sorbara. He went on to describe achievements of Ahmad, including how he performed an “agricultural miracle” when he grew wheat in Ghana for the first time.

Ahmad’s visit to York was organized by the organization Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at as part of his Canadian Tour 2016, which includes visits to Ottawa and Calgary.

“The peace and stability of the world is being jeopardized on a daily basis,” Ahmad told his audience. “There are those who move away from Islam, and this results in violence and devastation. We need to honour the true teachings of Islam. Our message is love for all, hatred for none.” He told the audience that Daesh is neither Islam or a state, and that they should not be associated with Islam.

Ahmad defined Islam as meaning peace, security and love and he read a passage from the Qur'an which states “Muslims’ loyalty to the truth must take precedence over all else. We must be fair and just with all parties.”

Omar Farooq, a fourth year theology student at a private college in the Caliph community, has heard Ahmad speak before, and plans to continue attending his lectures.

“His Holiness encourages us to form our own thoughts and opinions. That is why we love him. It is not a blind following, but he guides us to find our faith ourselves.”
