It was a sunny afternoon, though hazy. The gathering was hallow, the recitation was wholesome, capable of moving mountains, hairs on the bodies rose, a wave flew from head down to the feet, hearts were shaken, bodies shivered and tears rolled but some handkerchiefs were available to the rescue. The recitation was like a heavenly voice, it was indeed a heavenly message, delivered by young huffaz in a rendition that was uncommon. It was a place a good Muslim would love to be. It was the 2nd Tahfizul Quran/Graduation ceremony of seven young lads and a young girl at Mahmud Ahmadiyya College, Ijede, Lagos.

The graduands, Hamzah Abdul-Muiz,18;  Adebayo Abdul-Quadry, 15;  Saheed Bamidele, 15; Oyesanwen Sulaimon, 13;  Omope Abubakar, 16; Abdullah Hayat-ur-Rahman, 14;  Faruq Akinwunmi, 15 and Masturah Salisu Salisu, 13 held parents and invited guests spell bound during their recitation.

This was the second time the college will be churning out another set of Quran Memorisers.

How it all began

The Principal of the school, Dr Basirat Olajumoke Dikko said the school decided to establish the school of Quranic memorisation to contribute her quota in the preservation of the Holy book.

“The Quran was vouchsafed to an unlettered prophet in the Arabian desert more than 1400 years ago, and a new dawn in the history of humanity was heralded from that day onwards. At a time when poetry was the pastime of the Arabs, Allah sent down the illustrious verses of the Quran, filled with powerful rhymes and soothing rhythms. Yet, its status is far-above poetry. For 23 years the Holy Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) continued to  receive the revelation of the Quran and became the first Hafizul Quran!

“Following his precepts, the young and the old among his eminent companions committed the Quran to memory. This practice of memorizing the Quran has remained till today, preserving the text of the Holy Book and consolidating the prophecy on the protection of the Quran from interpolation (Q 15:10). Now read by at least a billion people on a daily basis, the Quran is a treasure house of timeless wisdom and spiritual sustenance.

“Filled with spiritual elixir, the Holy Book cures the soul of all spiritual maladies (Q 17:83). Besides its spiritual significance, the Quran also furnishes us with insights on secular and mundane issues, recommending values and principles for sustaining economic prosperity, social harmony and political stability.

Quran fills more heads than it fills their hearts

“However, the sad reality that pervades the world is that the Quran fills more heads than it fills their hearts. People now pride themselves in eloquent reading with lesser consciousness of their observance of its excellent teachings. The memorization of the Quran, no doubt, is a challenging task; the adherence to its injunctions, however, is even more demanding, considering the myriad of distractions that surround us.

The nobility of memorizing the Quran is widely acknowledged all over the world, but the loftiest station of an hafiz or an haafizah is determined by the piety the Quran cause to flow in their hearts. Clearly, leading a life that conforms to the teachings of the Quran should be a lifelong pursuit for everyone of us to achieve. May Allah help us to achieve such a noble status!

According to Dr. Dikko, “Today, we mark another milestone in the history or Mahmud Ahmadiyya College as we celebrate the success of our new Hufaaz-ul- Quran (the second set of ). We give great thanks to Allah for His grace on these young people: for protecting them during the period of their studies and for enabling them to complete the memorization of Quran within three years.

Haffaz as ambassadors of Islam

“To our dear Hufaaz-ul-Quran, I am delighted about your great achievements. We know it was not easy, but you were diligent in your studies. Your hard work has finally paid off, Alhamdulillah’ By Allah’s grace you have joined the ranks of the special servants of Allah.

“My counsel to you is that you should be good ambassadors of Islam wherever you find yourselves, by being exemplary in character and actions. You are the honourable bearers of the Word of Allah, and you are expected to reflect the greatness of the teachings of Islam through your conducts. Also, you should pray for your parents, who have sacrificed so much to see you through your studies. I pray Allah guide your hearts at all times with the light of the Quran!

Advice to parents

“To our dear parents, as we show gratitude to Allah, We should be reminded that,”to whom much is given much more is expected. These young people will grow in their understanding of the Quran as they grow older and as they learn the meaning of the verses, so you have only completed half of the assignment. The first half is your support and prayers for the children to successfully commit the Quran to memory.

“Furthermore, I am pleased to announce to you that we would be launching a new building for the Madrasatu Tahfiz (Hafiz School). This development is part of our commitment to continuous improvement. At Mahmud Ahmadiyya College, we are always working to beat our past achievements and to make progress in all areas possible. While the class building is in the pipeline, we hope to construct and complete the construction through the input of the school’s management as well as the support of eminent friends of the school.
