In the early hours of November 1st, a well respected Ahmadiyya Muslim elder, Ahmad Haleem of the Washington, DC Chapter of the Ahmadiyya community, breathed his last and returned to his Maker— to Him we belong and to Him shall we return.
He was a few weeks shy of turning 94 years old. Born Andrew Harrison Hall Bartholomew, he changed his name to ‘Ahmad Haleem’ —praiseworthy and trusted— when he accepted Islam.
Ahmad Haleem was well known for being patient, soft-spoken, and a kind human being.
Ahmad Haleem accepted Islam and Ahmadiyyat in 1953, and was one of the few converts left from the 1950s. He served the community in many capacities, including as president of Washington, DC and Qaid (director) Finance for Ahmadiyya Elders Association known as Ansarullah USA.
Despite serious ailments and physical limitations, Ahmad Haleem attended Jumuah (Friday services) at Fazl Mosque in Wshington DC —which requires walking up several stairs— until the end. When he learned of Ansarullah USA’s goal of getting 1,000 members to attend the ijtimah annual convention), despite his failing health and fragile condition, and being on dialysis, he came to the ijtimah. His condition worsened and that Friday he had to go to the hospital.
When Ansar (elders) visited him, the first thing he asked them was whether we reached the goal of 1,000 and expressed regret he was unable to stay all three days. Ahmad Haleem loved all Ahmadis and made it a point to share his wisdom with young and old, keeping toys in his car for young ones, and writing letters to Khuddam (Ahmadi youths) with advice.
Ahmad Haleem received the Mufti Muhammad Sadiq Lifetime Commitment Award in 2010.
He leaves behind his wife, son, and grandchildren, as well as a legacy of love for, and service to Allah and His Religion.
"Surely, to Allah we belong and to him we shall return."
