UK: Young Muslims raise thousands for Poppy Appeal to 'honour country and peace as Islam teaches them'

In the nine-year partnership with the Royal British Legion, AMYA members have raised over £200,000 for them through the Poppy Appeal.

Young Muslims are raising thousands of pounds collecting for the Poppy Appeal at multiple sites across the whole of the UK. (including Sheffield, Doncaster, Huddersfield)

For the members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA), this is a continuation of their work with the Royal British Legion over the past nine years.

This year, over 600 young Muslims belonging to the AMYA have been collecting in high streets, rail and tube stations, stadiums and airports around the UK. During 2016 the youth were also actively involved in the Tower of London Poppy installation.

They launched their campaign this year on the 4th November at The London Mosque in Southfield (London's first mosque), the Baitul Futuh Mosque in Morden (UK's largest mosque), in Epsom and in Yorkshire. They were joined by MPs, Members of the Armed Forces and The Royal British Legion.

The Caliph and worldwide leader of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, His Holiness, Mirza Masroor Ahmad said: "Muslims are obliged to be loyal to the country in which they live.

"Honouring those who fought to defend and safeguard one's country is an important principle of Islam and in fact is an important principle of peace – especially when it is carried out with a sincere heart and for the sake of winning God's pleasure."

In the nine-year partnership with the Royal British Legion, AMYA members have raised over £200,000 for them through the Poppy Appeal.

This is part of long-running nationwide initiatives by the AMYA to contribute to the country in different ways.

Other activities include blood drives, elderly home visits, feeding the homeless, charity events, green initiatives, peace conferences and interfaith meetings.

The Royal British Legion community fundraiser co-ordinator Deborah Armantrading said:

"AMYA have been crucial in raising funds for the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal for several years participating in mass collections all over the UK.

"The Legion are extremely pleased with the enthusiasm and commitment from all of the volunteers.

"We enjoy working with AMYA as they are dedicated and passionate about their charity work, and the Poppy Appeal would not be the same without their help."

Mirza Waqas Ahmad, National President of AMYA said: "The Holy Prophet of Islam, Muhammad (pbuh) said that to love ones country is part of your faith. This is true Islam. As Muslims it is our responsibility to show loyalty to our country of residence and work for the betterment of our country. We therefore hope that our participation is a clear indication of our desire for peace and unity between all peoples, nations and religions"
