Thousands of Muslims descended on the Lake District today to raise cash for charity.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Association UK’s #Mercy4Mankind charity campaign culminated in a half marathon in picturesque Keswick.

A spokesman for AMYA said: ‘This year’s event is the 32nd anniversary of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association’s Charity Challenge.

‘In that time we have raised in excess of £2.5million for dozens of British charities.’

This year the group are closing in on £500,000 for several charities including helping the communities which were hit by floods in the Lake District last year.

The spokesman added: ‘One of AMYA’s key objectives is to serve and contribute to society at all levels through active integration and engagement.

‘The purpose of all these activities is to engender the spirit of discipline and service to the wider community irrespective of people’s beliefs, race, or gender.

‘Its motto “Love for All, Hatred for None” underpins this ethos.’

The charities which have benefited from the #Mercy4Mankind fundraising include Cumbria Community Foundation, NSPCC, Oxfam, Cash for Kids, Save the Children, The Royal British Legion, British Red Cross and Cancer Research UK.
