Ilford Recorder: What’s your connection with the borough?
Samina Siddiqi: I work as a community volunteer focusing on charity events and other kinds of fundraising. I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to worth with Redbridge Food Bank, Macmillan Cancer Support and the British Legion’s Poppy Appeal among other things.
IR: What’s the best thing about working or living in the borough?
SS: The fact that people of all ethnicities, faiths and backgrounds are all welcome here. This ties in excellently with the motto of my community, the Ahmadiyya Muslim community, which is ‘Love for All Hatred for None’. I have wonderful neighbours and I genuinely am proud to live here. I also love the Ilford Exchange – it’s very convenient and a real godsend!
IR: What one thing would you change?
SS: At the moment you only get half an hour free parking in the borough – I’d have it increased to an hour!
IR: Use three words to describe the area?
SS: Vibrant, tolerant and multicultural.
IR: Who is the most inspiring person you have ever met?
SS: The leader of the international Ahmadiyya Muslim community, His Holiness Mirza Masroor Ahmad – because he spends all of his waking hours tirelessly and selflessly campaigning for peace in the world. This mission takes him all over the world, including places such as Capitol Hill, the European Parliament and the Houses of Parliament.
IR: What new law would you introduce if you were the prime minister?
SS: A law compelling Internet Service Providers to introduce opt-in only procedures regarding pornographic and other explicit websites for those households with under-18s living there.
IR: If you were the editor of this paper, what issues in the borough would you focus on?
SS: Issues affecting children because they’re our future – particularly bullying.
