Young men in Houston will spend the holiest Islamic holiday out in the streets helping in Houston recovery efforts
Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA), the young men’s organization of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA, has been at the forefront of helping victims in Houston since Hurricane Harvey began terrorizing Texas.
Hundreds of members of AMYA are in Houston to actively help with relief and recovery efforts and have committed not to take the day off on Friday for the Islamic holiday of Eid-ul-Adha.
Islam’s most important holiday, Eid-ul-Adha (Festival of Sacrifice) marks Prophet Abraham’s spirit of sacrifice and the close of the Hajj at the Holy Ka’aba in Mecca. This joyous day is celebrated to remind Muslims of the importance of sacrifice, service to humanity, and gratefulness to God. Thus in the spirit of sacrifice, hundreds of AMYA youth will spend Eid-ul-Adha continuing to aid the victims of Hurricane Harvey through boat rescues, safety evacuations, supplies, and clean-up services in damaged homes.
“To be God’s children means to selflessly provide for others, especially in their time of need,” said Dr. Bilal Rana, National President of AMYA. “This is why I have instructed our young men to continue this work during the holy day of Eid-ul-Adha as a way to inculcate the spirit of sacrifice in a very real way. Even as our own members are in need themselves, we will volunteer to help those in greater need.”
