Erfurt - The city has still not decided about it six months after submitting the building application for the planned mosque in Erfurt. Suleman Malik, spokesman of the Erfurt Ahmadiyya community, the German press desk, has not received any feedback.
He still reckons in the course of the year there will be a decision. When construction was begun, it was unclear - probably not until 2019. The municipality had submitted the building application for the project at the beginning of April. The city of Erfurt did not wish to comment during the proceedings.
The Muslim Ahmadiyya community would like to erect a one-story building with an eight-meter high ornamental minaret and a three-meter-high dome as well as two prayer rooms and an apartment for the Imam in the Erfurt district of Marbach. The municipality had previously estimated construction costs at up to 600,000 euros.
At the beginning of the year, mosque opponents erected several wooden crosses on a neighboring site. In May, wooden spitters with pig carcasses were erected on the building site and an animal protection association was formed in June, which saw the Feldhamster population endangered by the construction. The environmental association BUND disagreed. Currently, especially in the social media sentiment against the community, said Malik.
The spokesman assumes that the building application will be awarded positively in 2017 - also because a building request was already positively decided. "The legal situation suggests that one can build a mosque on this site," said Malik. He emphasized, however: "With such things you need a lot of patience and serenity." Currently the Ahmadiyya community operates 52 mosques in Germany.
It is unclear how quickly a decision will be taken with the construction. This depends, on the one hand, on the outcome of the application. On the other hand, larger municipalities such as those in Wiesbaden have priority. The Ahmadiyya community plans a mosque in other cities, such as in Nuremberg, Leipzig and Wiesbaden. According to Malik, the municipality of Wiesbaden counts about 1000 members, the Thuringian municipality between 70 and 75. Therefore it is possible that the construction in Erfurt only 2019 begins.
The Nuremberg Mosque is the only Ahmadiyya prayer house currently under construction.
