MERIDEN — Volunteers in bright orange shirts walked through neighborhoods cleaning up trash as part of Mayor’s Community Clean-Up Day.
...
Before he took to the streets, Meriden Mayor Kevin Scarpati said this year was one of the largest clean-ups they’ve had, in terms of turnout.

“It’s great to see that people want to get involved,” he said.

The goal of the event isn’t just to clean up as much as they can in a few hours, but to inspire residents to get involved and take care of their environment, by not littering and dumping and caring for their property, the mayor said.

“Everybody wants to see change,” said Zahir Mannan, outreach director for Ahmadiyya Peace Mosque, before he joined other members of the mosque who volunteered. “Everybody wants to see their city progress and advance. But they don’t know they have opportunities to do that themselves. So this is the opportunity for us to practice what we preach and be the change we want to see.

“When you come to community events like this and you see Christians, Muslims, atheists, secular people, everybody coming together for a common cause that kind of brings the humanity out in people,” he added.
