Perspective: Australia Day source of unity | Soofi Aziz
I am free to practice my faith as an Ahmadiyya Muslim without fear of persecution. And Australia Day will never be a day of complete unity if we don’t include the first peoples.

It is very encouraging to hear that 70 per cent of Australians do not want the date of Australia Day changed (“January 26 wins tick from 70pc”, 24/1).
At a time of rising terrorism and the far-right, this survey reinforces the need for us to unite as a nation instead of debating for a change of date.
Australia Day is a day to celebrate the values of liberal democracy, freedoms and rule of law.
As a result of such values, I am free to practice my faith as an Ahmadiyya Muslim without fear of persecution. And Australia Day will never be a day of complete unity if we don’t include the first peoples.
