The erecting of minarets over mosques has become a hotly contested issue in Switzerland.
According to the BBC, many Swiss fundamentalist organizations and their well-wisher object to the mosques with raised minarets, claiming that such markers represent Muslims’ religious or political supremacy in a society. The Muslim organizations, on the other hand, assert that the minarets only signify that it is a place of worship.
By declaring an ‘open day’ at the mosques, many Islamic organizations of the Switzerland hope to gain positive awareness about their places of worship, especially about the erection of minarets. Organizers at various Islamic organizations have invited the general public to come on next Saturday to visit the mosques and ask any question that might be agitating their minds.
Three weeks later the fate of building future minarets will be decided through a public referendum.
The current opinion polls indicate that the ban on building minarets will be overturned, the BBC reported.
