More than 1,000 members of the Ahmadiyya branch of Islam are expected to gather in Chino Friday through Sunday for the denomination's annual West Coast convention.
The convention is at the Baitul Hameed Mosque, 11941 Ramona Ave., which was damaged by fire in 2003 and was repaired and expanded into a new 27,000-square-foot building that opened in August. About half the Ahmadi Muslims who attend the mosque are from Riverside and San Bernardino counties.
The Ahmadiyya denomination was founded in 1889 by Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, who declared himself the messiah. Ahmadis are considered heretics by some Muslims and face repression in some countries, including Pakistan, which bans them from declaring their faith publicly.
