Iceland: Volcanic ash an air traffic-stopper in Europe

Dangerous volcanic ash has caused cancelation of thousands of flights, many to and from the U.S.

Iceland volcano plume expected to cancel more than 21,000 flights today and may spread to Germany and Poland on Friday, European agency says

Five major airports in London, including Heathrow are closed. Dozens of flights to and from the U.S. have been cancelled and delays are getting worse. Authorities stopped all flights over Britain, Ireland and the Nordic countries.


The problem is expected to last for days. If you are enroute to Europe in the next few days, you should check in with your airline.


CLOSURES IN EUROPE [Daily Mail]

Ireland: Airspace totally closed from noon until 8pm, with more than 60,000 passengers affected and at least 60 flights cancelled by national carrier Aer Lingus.

Norway: Airspace closed with first flights cancelled on Wednesday night. Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg stuck in New York after Oslo airport shut completely at 9am local time.

Denmark: Airspace totally closed from 5pm until further notice, wrecking Queen Margrethe’s 70th birthday party as European royalty and foreign VIPs were unable to fly in.

Finland: Northern airspace closed until 1pm tomorrow, with Finnair forced to cancel a number of domestic and international flights.

Sweden: Airspace totally closed from 10pm tonight, and airports in the north of the country shut all day, sending shares in Scandinavian airline SAS down 7per cent.

Belgium: Airspace totally closed from 4.30pm on the orders of European air control authorities Eurocontrol, leaving thousands stuck in Brussels after Eurostar trains were packed.

Holland:  Airspace totally closed from 9pm and chaos all day at Amsterdam’s Schipol airport, a major European hub, with dozens of flights cancelled, mainly from the UK, Scandinavia and Russia.

France: All flights north cancelled until midnight at least and 66 flights scrapped from Paris alone to UK airports.

Switzerland: Significant disruption at Geneva, another hub, with flights to northern Europe scrapped and an influx of passengers from America, Asia and Africa unable to travel on further.

Germany: Airspace over northwestern Germany closed this afternoon, grounding dozens of flights.
