A SCHOOL in Lautoka has become the latest suspect of termite attacks.
Ahmadiyya Muslim Primary School was inspected last week by Quarantine Department officials after the wooden structures of one building in the school compound were found to be infested with insects.
School manager Abdul Rahim could not confirm if it was a case of termite infestation, saying they had sought help from the Quarantine Department when they noticed that some wooden parts of the building appeared decayed.
He said the wooden planks had numerous holes in them, which appeared to be caused by insects.
"We noticed this in one of our buildings which is where vocabulary and kindergarten classes are held," Mr Rahim said. "We asked quarantine officials to inspect the premises so they came last week and we haven't had any feedback from them yet.
Mr Rahim said the premises was still being used.
Head of education ministry Filipe Bole said he was not aware of any schools being infested with termites.
"If any school is affected, the management should seek assistance from the right people. We are concerned about this outbreak but we do not really have any expertise to offer," he said.
Mr Bole said he had not received any reports of school premises being infested with termites.
A termite outbreak in Lautoka has forced at least one family to abandon their home and several others to constantly repair their homes to prevent them from collapsing.
