Pakistan: General Zia-Ul-Haq name removed from constitution

The 1985 parliament inserted Article 270A in the Constitution while the 2002 legislature approved the Article 270AA, aimed at providing a legal cover to the steps taken by the two dictators while holding the office of the President of Pakistan.

ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN NEWS: The National Assembly on Thursday unanimously approved the abolishment of Article 270-A of the Constitution, an amendment after which the name of former dictator General Zia-ul-Haq has been removed from the Constitution, ARY NEWS reported.

The abolishment was okayed during the clause-by-clause approval of the 18th Constitutional Amendment presently underway in the National Assembly.

The house also declared the steps taken by former military ruler General (retd.) Pervez Musharraf till 2002 illegal by approving abolishment of Article 270-AA of the Constitution.

The house also repealed ban on third time premiership and the presidential authority to dissolve parliament, besides other reforms.

The house, with Speaker Fehmida Mirza in chair, carried out clause by clause voting on the bill, and also unanimously adopted Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa as new name of the NWFP province.
