Sir: In a country beleaguered by a powerful Islamist insurgency, where suicide bombings are rampant and government offensives widely touted as ineffective, anyone can be subjected to civil rights abuse or oppression. But for the nation’s minorities — its small and precious communities of Hindus, Christians, Sikhs and others — life is predominantly precarious.
Under serious threats of converting religions and enforced offences such as shaving off hair of Sikh captives when remaining hirsute is a deeply important religious precept for them, thousands have fled their villages, helplessly crowding into urban slums or wherever they find refuge. The rest have fled the country.
It is heart wrenching to read about such acts of savagery when these communities add to the vibrancy and pluralism of our cultural fabric and hence should be celebrated and nurtured all the more. We as a nation condemn and declare zero tolerance towards this mindless bigotry.
