The members of the local Ahmadiyya Muslim Community from Bait-ur Rizwan Mosque in Southwest Portland kicked off first of their six planned blood drives for the year 2010.
The organization has a target to collect 200 bags during the year.
The organizers want to ensure that the Red Cross and the local hospitals have enough supply of blood for their patients.
Harris Zafar, one of the organizers for the blood drive and a spokesperson for the community has organized similar successful blood drives during the previous year.
“As Muslims who believe in the Messiah, one of our goals is to provide comfort and support and humanitarian services to our community - so part of that is to save lives,” told Zafar when speaking to a local television station KGW, channel 8.
“We save lives by organizing blood drives all over the country,” Zafar explained.
The first 30 people who registered to donate blood were entered into a drawing for two free courtside tickets to a Blazers game.
The donors were treated to many Indian-style food dishes along with the traditional juice and donuts.
