Eye on Terrorism: Times Square bomber has unbelievable story

From his background, to the chronology of events that took place on that Saturday night, it almost looks like a low-financed Hollywood movie.

Editor, Times-Dispatch: The story of Faisal Shahzad, the New York City bomb suspect, is hard to believe.

From his background, to the chronology of events that took place on that Saturday night, it almost looks like a low-financed Hollywood movie. An ambitious 19-year-old man arrives in the land of opportunity and he readily avails himself. He works hard, gets married, and lives happily with his wife and kids.

All of a sudden he plans to be a terrorist. This is where the story gets a little interesting. Unlike professional terrorists who are fully financed for their efforts, Faisal happens to be an impoverished one. He buys an old SUV for $1,300 in cash from a college student and bargain fireworks to be used as explosives through Craigslist. His attempt failed not necessarily because of police efficiency, but because of his own incompetency.

In any case, he is arrested within hours. Again, unlike other terrorists, he is reported to have waived his right to a speedy arraignment and is open for trial. The story does not portray a typical terrorist here. Either Faisal is suffering with psychological problems, or his storywriter needs to do a better job next time.
