CLASS Seven student Selai Niusere was full of confidence at the national oratory contest organised by Save the Children Fiji last week on Saturday.
Representing Ahmadiyya Muslim Primary in Narere, Selai said the opportunity was an eye-opener.
"I was very confident about the competition and I was well prepared," she said. "The topic was 'Protect Children-Eliminate Violence'. It's very important for people to realise the need to protect children."
Headteacher Mohammed Hanif said it was the first time the school had won an oratory contest, and it was a stepping stone for young children to develop the skill of public speaking.
"We are very proud of Selai and her achievement. I have not been in the school that long but she has a very pleasant personality," he said.
"She won the divisional oratory contest for the primary category and later the national contest in the same category."
Save the Children Fiji CEO Chandra Shekhar said the organisation had been involving primary and secondary students in oratory contests to express their feelings in the public arena.
"If children's voices are not heard in open forums and by those who provide care, support and protection, they will have no other place to do that except share it with classmates and friends," he said. "That will be in a limited environment.
"Different forms of violence children can be subjected to are physical and mental, injury, abuse, neglect, ill-treatment, exploitation and worst of all, murder."
Mr Shekhar said winners of district contests went on to the divisional and national levels.
