A MUSLIM group in Southall has started a campaign to tackle misconceptions about Islam and counter religious extremism.
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Association (AMA) is using messages on the side of London's buses and distributing flyers promoting a message of "loyalty, freedom, equality, respect, peace."
The initiative is part of a national campaign which also involves a special website, and the aim is that by the end of the year, at least 10 per cent of homes in the borough will have received information on what the group says is the true message of Islam.
The president of the Southall branch of AMA, Shaikh Latif ur Rahman, said: "The aim of the publicity campaign is to reassert the true principles of Islam and to counter the extremists who hijack the faith for political ends.
"By emphasising the values highlighted in this campaign we hope to facilitate a better understanding of Islam so that people can judge for themselves the actions of those who claim to speak and act in its good name. Islam stresses the promotion of peace in words and deeds."
Mr Rahman added the group is aiming to have adverts places on the sides of the E3, 207. 427 and 105 buses in Southall.
The campaign has already gathered support from Ealing Southall MP Virendra Sharma, who said: "My long association with the Ahmadiyya community has given me a personal appreciation of the positive work they are doing in the UK to promote understanding of Islam and peace. I have seen this vividly in my Ealing Southall constituency, where the commitment to promoting peace and brotherhood has been unstinting."
