HOUSTON - On the eve of an anniversary which still resonates with national suffering, words of comfort and of strength resounded through a North Houston Mosque on the day after Ramadan's end.
"Let us be prepared and stand prepared to offer any sacrifice for the constitution of America and the freedom it stands for,” Mohammed Zafarullah, Imam of Houston's Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, said.
"Our heart goes out to those innocent people who lost their loved ones in the 9/11attack," Zafarullah preached to a mosque full of worshipers.
It was a message of healing aimed at both the faithful and those who do not share this faith; driven by a core conviction that only through peace and mutual respect can all truly prosper.
"Let us also pray, long live America, the beautiful land of freedom and opportunity," exclaimed Zafarullah.
It is from this congregation and others like it that a movement called "Muslims for Peace" has sprung.
Many who joined in prayer at the post Ramadan celebration of Eid, have bravely taken their mission to Houston's streets.
"Basically going door to door and telling them we are Muslims, we are your neighbors, we are loyal citizens of this country," Amir Malik, president of the Ahmadiyya Community and a participant in Muslims for Peace, said.
Malik says the MFP block walkers in Houston have encountered very little hostility and a great deal of openness from their non-Muslim neighbors.
