Gambia: Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Abubakarr Gaye passes away

Dr Gaye was appointed as minister of Health and Social Welfare on 30th October, 2009. He replaced Dr. Mariatou Jallow.

Information reaching the Daily Observer revealed that Dr. Abubakarr Gaye, the minister of Health and Social Welfare, yesterday passed away at the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital (RVTH) where he was admitted and receiving treatment.

The late Minister Gaye, age 56, hailed from Barra Village, Lower Niumi District, North Bank Region.

A highly qualified general practitioner with an in-depth knowledge of tropical medicine and over 30 years of experience in West Africa, Dr Gaye was appointed as minister of Health and Social Welfare on 30th October, 2009. He replaced Dr. Mariatou Jallow.


Prior to his appointment as minister of Health, Dr. Gaye worked as Chief Medical Officer at the Bansang Hospital from 1979-1981.

He later worked as Surgical and Gynaecological Assistant at the Ahmadiyah Hospital in Tallinding from 1998-2004.
