A peace conference in Leicester attracted a wide spectrum of faith and community leaders who pledged to support community cohesion in the city and county.
The conference and dinner was organized by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association and was addressed by Leicester West MP and Shadow Health Minister Liz Kendal and the Archdeacon of Leicester, the Ven. Richard Atkinson.
Other speakers at the event which attracted over 150 people were Maqsood Ahmed, Faiths Adviser to the Department of Communities and Local Government; Prof Malcolm Shaw QC, School of Law at the University of Leicester and Richard Keenan, Chief Inspector at Leicestershire Constabulary.
Members of the Leicester Council of Faiths, including Chair Cllr Manjula Sood, supported the event.
The aim of the conference was to signal the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community’s solidarity with others in the fight against hatred and extremism. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community’s code, Love For All, Hatred for None, was highlighted at the event which took place at Braunstone Civic Centre, Leicester.
President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association in Leicester, Dr Habib Akram, said: “We hold peace events across Britain along with charity fund raising events. We are part of the fabric of British life and wish to contribute positively towards the communities in which we live.
“There is so much more that unites us all than divides us and it is through events like this that we build networks of friendship and solidarity against the extremists and hatemongers. Our peace event is just one way of signalling that we, as Ahmadi Muslims, stand shoulder to shoulder with all other Muslims and people of other faiths in our commitment to build a peaceful future in Leicester.
“This is our home and that of our children and we are committed to fostering community cohesion.”
