Three months ago, President Obama lauded Indonesia as a model of religious tolerance. Unfortunately, recent events tell a different story. On Feb. 6, 2011, three members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community were martyred in Indonesia when a mob stormed the local center of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community.
This attack is not simply the act of rogue criminals, but is part of a continuous plan to harass Ahmadis.
In June 2008, the Indonesian government disallowed the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community from proselytizing, violations of which result in up to five years in prison. The Religious Affairs Minister of Indonesia has repeatedly called for the banning of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community.
This is neither the first, nor will it be the last, attack on Ahmadi Muslims if the government of Indonesia continues to sponsor religious intolerance and violence against Ahmadi Muslims. Americans should urge our government to take the next step and call on Indonesia to repeal its decree against Ahmadi Muslims.
