Indonesia: FPI Plans Protest Against Ahmadiyah

Al-Khaththath accused President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of violating a 1965 law on blasphemy for condoning Ahmadiyah. “The growth and spread of Ahmadiyah in this country is a form of blasphemy that has gone on for far too long,” he said.

Hard-line Muslims plan to rally at the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle today to demand Ahmadiyah be disbanded.

This will be just the latest show of force against the minority Muslim sect. The Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) organized a rally two weeks ago that saw more than 1,000 hard-liners threaten to topple the government unless it outlawed Ahmadiyah.

“What we want is for the state to disband the organization, have the leaders arrested and tried, and have their followers [reintroduced] to the right path of Islam,” Muhammad Al-Khaththath, secretary general of the Islamic People’s Forum (FUI), said on Monday.

The FUI groups a number of hard-line Islamic organizations including the FPI and Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia.

Al-Khaththath accused President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of violating a 1965 law on blasphemy for condoning Ahmadiyah. “The growth and spread of Ahmadiyah in this country is a form of blasphemy that has gone on for far too long,” he said.

Ahmadiyah’s followers belief the group’s founder, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, was a prophet, a claim disputed by most Muslims.

The FUI said it would remain in front of the State Palace until Ahmadiyah was disbanded.

Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Baharudin Djafar said 2,000 officers would be deployed at the rally site.
