Indonesian Military Chief Admiral Agus Suhartono has denied he was behind “Operation Sajadah” (“Operation Prayer Mat”) to convert members of the Ahmadiyah sect to mainstream Islam.
Agus said he had checked with Army Maj. Gen. Moeldoko, the head of the Siliwangi command in West Java, and “had not found anything called Operation Sajadah.”
The admiral said before the Indonesian Military (TNI) conducted any operation, they first had to prepare a plan and a budget.
The budget, he said, needed to be approved by a TNI commander and the House of Representatives (DPR).
He said military personnel in West Java had not conducted any such operation, but instead had helped local officials.
Agus denied allegations the TNI had been intimidating the minority sect to bring them back into the mainstream Muslim fold.
He said the TNI protected people so they could “feel safe.”
“Do not consider it as intimidation. Their presence, according to the West Java TNI commander, was to prevent violence.”
