Indonesia: Ahmadi Teachers Hounded from West Java Schools by Islamonazi Bigots

Dadang Rahardjo of Bogor Police refused to call the incident an attack, insisting it was merely a case of “rock throwing.”  “There was no attack, it was just some villagers throwing stones at the houses of Ahmadiyah followers,” he said.

Seven Ahmadis ( identified only by their initials, are under pressure from local people. They are NH, NN, AA, M, and IW, from the village of Ciampea and two people from the YS and IW of Ciaruteun village.

Because they face threats to their very lives, the seven elementary school teachers (SD) haven’t been actively teaching, skipping work. Consequently, they were summoned by the Department of Education (Disdik) Bogor regency, on Tuesday (19 / 4), and Wednesday (20 / 4). They underwent examinations, related disciplinary action they did.

“Yes, we called them and confirmed reports that they are not actively teaching,” said Roni Kusmaya, of Disdik Bogor regency, who met with Media Indonesia on Thursday (21 / 4).

Initially, added Roni, it seemed they’d have sanctions imposed on them, in accordance with existing regulations, because of their indiscipline. “However, after we asked for more detailed reasons, it turns out they no longer come to work because of threats,” he explained.

Because of these conditions, the Disdik finally issued a recommendation for the seven to be reassigned.

“We’re not talking about Ahmadiyah or its teachings, but keeping to the rules. Because their lives are in danger, to avoid undesirable consequences, we re-arranged things. Because the rules exist, we don’t make the rules,” he explained.

Roni revealed that the victims had told his department that on March 21 some 208 residents around Ciampea had made a statement urging them not to teach anymore, and in fact to leave the area.

A similar declaration had occurred in Ciaruteun, Cibungbulang District, on 12 March, where locals wanted their Ahmadi teachers banned from work and expelled from the community.

“Those 208 residents included parents, school committees, the neighbour hood head and the district head. In fact, YS’s house, in Cibungbulang, was attacked and his family had to be evacuated,” said Roni.

Roni said that for the teachers’ physical safety, he could not say where they’d been transferred.

YS spoke for himself and the others when he told the media, “It’s not that we do not want to teach, but we are under threat! My house was destroyed, and even now my family has had to be taken away to a place of safety.”

“According to witnesses [at Wednesday’s attack], there were at least five police officers present at the scene,” Ahmad said.

“They just watched the stoning and did nothing. Our position is really threatened now. This is the second time they have attacked Ahmadis in Ciampea.” JG 24/2

Dadang Rahardjo of Bogor Police refused to call the incident an attack, insisting it was merely a case of “rock throwing.”  “There was no attack, it was just some villagers throwing stones at the houses of Ahmadiyah followers,” he said.
