Connecticut Muslims react to bin Laden death

"That is why we are loyal to our country, because they give freedom of expression, and even bringing a terrorist to justice, they still satisfied our ways of burial of the dead. I was happy about that with the American government, that they gave a body that respect." [Zahir Mannan]

Middletown, Conn (WTNH) - The Muslim community is reacting to the death of Osama bin Laden, saying they hope it will help stop misconceptions about their religion.

"Finally, someone who has been throwing dirt on the face of a beautiful religion and a terrorist has been caught. A murderer has been caught, and the first thing that went through my mind was empathy for the 9/11 victims and their families." said Zahir Mannan of Middletown.

There are strong words from Muslims in Connecticut. On Tuesday night there was an interfaith symposium with Muslims, Jews, and Christians, all talking about the death of bin Laden, and how the Americans gave him an Islamic burial at sea.

"That is why we are loyal to our country, because they give freedom of expression, and even bringing a terrorist to justice, they still satisfied our ways of burial of the dead. I was happy about that with the American government, that they gave a body that respect," Mannan said.

While Americans were dancing in the streets at ground zero in New York, Muslims in Connecticut were a little bit more cautious, concerned there may be repercussions from Al-Qaeda.

"It's always in the back of your head because, you are not sure, and people have different perspective about things. People take things differently. Yeah, I am scared, but I am still full behind my country," said Sana Shah from Middletown.

"A terrorist was brought to justice, but we should not be cheering yet, because the war on terror still rages on," said Mannan.
