LAHORE: A public interest litigation company Muhammad and Ahmad, through its chairman Muhammad Azhar Siddique, moved a petition in the Lahore High Court (LHC), requesting a permanent ban on the access of the social networking website Facebook, for again holding an objectionable and blasphemous contest called the “2nd Annual Draw Muhammad Day-May 20, 2011.”

The petitioner stated that the government should be directed to establish a permanent authority, having legal status, which will monitor all objectionable activities across the world that insulted the Holy Prophet (PBUH) as well as other holy personalities belonging to different religions.

He also requested that directions be given to the federal government to stop the display of material with respect to blasphemy of any religion or its holy personalities on Facebook and all other social networking websites in Pakistan.

Siddique requested that Facebook and all similar websites be permanently blocked or banned in Pakistan for airing, placing, visualising caricatures of the Holy Prophet (PBUH).

Separately, he also requested that due to holding another blasphemous drawing competition, civil lines police station SHO be directed to register a criminal case under section 295-C and other relevant provisions of Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) against the perpetrators.

The petitioner had earlier moved a petition on which a case was lodged against the Facebook administration and the court had disposed of the petition, giving directions to the government to keep a strict check on display of material hurting the religious sentiments of the people.
