Musharraf’s party sends legal notice to Guardian
LAHORE: Former president Pervez Musharraf’s party has issued a legal notice to British news paper Guardian for publishing a report that said Musharraf had signed an agreement with the US that allowed Washington to conduct unilateral raids in Pakistan.
The notice has been filed by secretary-general All Pakistan Muslim League (APML), Barrister Saif Ali Khan, against the reporter who filed this story and Guardian’s chief editor. The APML has sought a compensation of $5 million for what it says was a “false” and “fabricated” news meant to “malign the former president and to stigmatise his political image.”
The legal notice states that Guardian published the news without confirmation which has not only damaged Musharraf’s reputation but has also established a ridiculous impression that Pakistan and the US worked beyond the sphere of their domestic laws as well as the international law.
Former president Pervez Musharraf did not sign any secret deal with the US for unilateral raids inside Pakistani territory and Inter Service Intelligence Director-General Pasha has also acknowledged this during his briefing during the recent in-camera session of the parliament,” a press release quoted Barrister Saif as saying.
“Pervez Musharraf is a patriotic leader and compared to other leaders, he never compromised for the sovereignty and integrity of the country and prioritised Pakistan’s stability and progress,” the press release stated.
