“We have enough evidence that show Deden’s intention to abuse others. He had prepared weapons inside his car. He also neglected the police’s order to get out of Cikeusik.”

State prosecutors demanded Tuesday a nine months’ prison term for Deden Darmawan Sujana, a defendant in the bloody clash that took place between a group of Islamic hardliners and the minority Ahmadiyah sect in Cikeusik, Banten, on Feb. 6.

Serang Prosecutor’s Office head Jan Marinka said that Deden had allegedly breached Criminal Code Article 160 on inciting hatred and Article 351 (1) on physical abuse.

“We have enough evidence that show Deden’s intention to abuse others. He had prepared weapons inside his car. He also neglected the police’s order to get out of Cikeusik,” he said.

Deden is among 13 defendants involved in the clash, that left three Ahmadis dead and five injured, and became the only Ahmadi taken to trial. He is being tried separately.

The other 12 defendants have been sentenced to terms of between three and six months in prison, slightly lighter than the prosecutors’ demand for five to seven months, on July 28. Prosecutors declined to charge anyone with the murder of the Ahmadis, instead charging them with inciting hatred.(lfr)
