White house hosted its annual Iftar dinner just a few days ago with about 100 guests including 32 Ambassadors, mostly from Muslim countries, a hand full of congressmen including the first Muslim American elected Congressman; Mr. Hamza Abdullah, and some prominent Muslim community members including the National Vice-President of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, U.S.A, Mr. Naseem Mahdi.
Historically speaking though, President Thomas Jefferson was first to hold an Iftar dinner. It was for the first Muslim Ambassador to United States, who was from Tunisia. In recent times, President Clinton renewed this tradition and the successors have been consistently holding it and all for good reason.
America is known for its diversity. People from different colors, races and religions call it home and take part in loving, caring and building this nation. So it is not peculiar that the leaders of this great nation show respect to the faith traditions representative of its people.
As a Muslim, I commend Mr. Obama’s approach for persistently highlighting the contributions of Muslim Americans in the past and specifically on this dinner. He expressed that Muslim Americans have worked hard and served this nation before, on and after 9/11. I think this is true and Muslim Americans are indeed determined to continue on this path only because they love this country like any other loyal citizen.
