ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. (WJBK) - Friday afternoon prayer in one room, people donating blood in another. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Center on West Auburn Road was transformed into a Red Cross blood drive site Friday commemorating the victims of 9/11.
"We want to help people understand that saving lives and participating in community service, that is what we believe in," said Mujeeb Ijaz with the center.
This drive was part of a nationwide effort called Muslims for Life. The goal -- collect 10,000 pints of blood and potentially save 30,000 lives. It was also an effort to remind people the extremists responsible for 9/11 do not represent Muslims across the world.
"Unless we actively participate in educating people of what we stand for, then the extremists get to take their stand and there's no counter-voice," Ijaz explained.
As the tenth anniversary approaches, organizers were quick to point out Muslims also died in the attacks and were among the heroic first responders and the countless volunteers.
"Muslims stood with Americans on the basis that this was a crime against humanity," Ijaz said.
"We're all here. We're all in this together. We're all Americans, and we all need to work together to help save lives," said Kathy Ritter with the American Red Cross.
