Some local food pantries got an extra, unexpected supply of food to fill their shelves today thanks to Sen. Diane Allen.
Organizers and directors from 17 South Jersey area food banks came to a warehouse in Delran to pick up their share of 100,000 nutrition bars which Sen. Allen donated to the food pantries. She said Nourish America helped in the donation and that the nutrition bars could help the food banks for the next four or five months. She was surprised to find that in Burlington County alone, 51,000 go to bed at night not knowing whether they’ll have food in the morning and the fact that 17 food pantries all expressed such a need isn’t too reassuring going into the holiday season.
She said the need is only growing with the holidays approaching, when children won’t be receiving lunch and breakfast at school. To try and cushion the blow to the food banks, Sen. Allen called out to the National Order of Women Legislators for help in organizing the donation. She said the all-women group of legislators from around the country does what they can to help each other after disasters. She said if it’s possible to help then, why not anytime.
“The nutrition bars that we are able to donate were donated by Nourish America through the National Foundation of Women Legislators,” she said. “I thank them for responding to my request for help, and I thank Whitesell Construction for agreeing to warehouse the supplies.”
Muhammad Suleman, organizer of the four-month old Ahmadiyya Muslim Community food pantry on Bridge Street in Willingboro said the donation will really help him get the project off the ground. He said right now they help support 28 families, or about 75 people, but the need keeps growing each week. “This will really assist the need to help feed the hungry in Willingboro,” he said. “One way to worship the creator is to serve his creation.” 1
