Eye on truth: Does Shariah Law Let Men Abuse Women?

I’m not saying it’s any better or worse than anywhere else in the world. I’m just saying that it’s a red herring to blame Shariah Law as a harming factor to women. The women being abused in America are largely Christian. We don’t blame Biblical law do we? Never.

The headline is a common — baseless — allegation many critics levy against Islam. The fact is, however, men don’t harm women because of Shariah Law. They harm women in spite of Shariah Law. Shariah Law was the first law in history, religious or otherwise, to grant women the right to choose who they marry, the right to choose to divorce, the right to inherit property, the right to own a business, the right to keep their own money, the right to participate in the political process, the right to be a lawyer or judge–and yes, the right to focus on raising children and not have to worry about finances, because that is a burden Islam places squarely on men.

But what of men who abuse women in the name of Shariah Law? Well, the reality is thatsuch men will find whatever reason they need to harm women. This is a fact. And let’s be real, does anyone think domestic violence in America is low? (I bring up America because some insist on thinking America is a “Christian” nation.) Well, if it is, then what is the status of women in this so-called “Christian” nation?

In America, domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women. More than accidents, muggings, and rapes, combined. Every 9 seconds, a woman in America is abused. In the time it will take you to read this post, at least 10 more women in America will have been abused. Horrifying isn’t it? Roughly 20% of teenage girls are threatened with violence if they break up with their boyfriends. I’m not saying it’s any better or worse than anywhere else in the world. I’m just saying that it’s a red herring to blame Shariah Law as a harming factor to women. The women being abused in America are largely Christian. We don’t blame Biblical law do we? Never. Nor should we ever. Abusers don’t need religion to abuse women, they need an excuse, or sometimes not even that.

Yes, sometimes the excuse is religion. But sometimes it is alcohol, sometimes it is drugs, sometimes it is money, often it is a feeling of failure, self-worthlessness, depression — the point is, no excuse is valid, but abusers find it somehow, somewhere, through some twisted reasoning. To blame any religious law, or any other factor, is to miss the point that nothing should ever take the blame off the person doing the abusing.

Shariah Law is a vehicle. When a drunk driver kills someone, we don’t blame the car, we blame the drunk driver for driving. The problem is abusive men who find an excuse. Let’s not blame the excuse, let’s blame the men who abuse – that is how to solve the problem.
