Orange County ophthalmologist raises funds and awareness for annual Gift of Sight eye clinic in Guatemala
Ophthalmologist and Humanity First USA program director Dr. Ahsan Khan is preparing to take part in the upcoming Southern California Half Marathon in Irvine on Saturday, January 7, 2012.
Humanity First USA’s Gift of Sight program serves to provide basic eye care to those in need around the world. The team of medical professionals and volunteers returned from their second successful annual eye clinic in Guatemala at the end of October 2011, where hundreds of patients received free full eye exams and thirty sight-restoring cataract surgeries were performed.
Not only is he the Gift of Sight program director and lead surgeon during the annual eye clinics, but Dr. Khan is also an avid runner who has taken part in three prior half marathons and the 2010 Los Angeles Marathon. Since his return from Guatemala last year, Dr. Khan has been preparing for the Southern California Half Marathon and raising awareness and funds for Gift of Sight.
"A $100 donation covers the cost of cataract surgery, so my hope is running 13.1 miles can raise enough to help restore sight to twenty people," says Dr. Khan. He has raised over half his target of $2020 and he hopes to achieve this goal before he crosses the finish line this weekend.
