There is an alarming increase in the growth of food deserts in America in both rural and urban areas and as a direct result, a variety of health problems are developing in the affected communities as well. Food deserts in America are not necessarily defined by the absence of food, but rather, they are an area in the developed world where healthy, affordable food and fresh produce is difficult to access.

An innovative and resourceful solution to the food deserts across the nation is the development of urban gardens to offer nutritional options and encourage a healthier lifestyle in these areas. Not only are these gardens effective against urban blight and food deserts, but they also support civic engagement.

Humanity First USA sponsored the Organic Farm in 2008 to provide fresh organic fruits and vegetables to the Walnut Park community in St. Louis, Missouri at a low cost. They are now in their fourth year and steadily expanding gardens into other lots. The success of the Sadiq Organic Farm has inspired other home gardens in the area and Humanity First USA volunteers are building a community council for local gardens.
