It is probably one of the first landmarks people envision when they think of Vaughan.

That’s right, Canada’s Wonderland will serve as the backdrop for this year’s Run for Vaughan.

Now in its eighth year, the run has so far raised $323,000 for the future Vaughan hospital. It specifically gives the funds to the Vaughan Health Care Foundation, the group charged with raising the community portion to build the city’s first health-care facility.

Organized by Vaughan’s Ahmadiyya Muslim community, the run draws about 1,000 participants each year. Some new features will be rolled out this year including changes to the route.

Participants will have the opportunity to run in the amusement park, which will be closed at the time of the race. There is free parking for participants who arrive before 7:30 a.m.

This year’s event will also see a change in the distances offered. The 10-kilometre race is still featured, however, organizers have added a 5-k race to replace the 3-k that was a part of the day in year’s past.

You’ll also find the addition of a complimentary pasta dinner for participants and family members on Saturday, May 26 starting at 5 p.m. at the AMJ Sports Hall at the Baitul Islam Mosque, 10610 Jane St. in Maple.

Asif Khan, one of the run’s organizers, warned this won’t be a flat course.

“It will be hilly and it will be great doing the run inside the park,” Mr. Khan said.

He wants to grow the race even bigger and is hoping the allure of running in Canada’s biggest amusement park will attract people from outside the city.

There are prizes for the top fundraisers as well.

Participants who raise more than $100 for the run gain free entry to the park. Participants who raise $250 get three passes or one season pass.
Discounted day passes for the park purchased through Run for Vaughan are valid from May 27 to June 3 at a cost of $28.99 each.

For those who raise $500,  a Kobo 6-inch eReader or six Canada’s Wonderland Day Passes or two Canada’s Wonderland season passes are the prizes.

For those who raise $1,000, a Canada’s Wonderland season pass for four or an Apple iPod Touch 4G is offered up.

For those who raise $2,500 The New Apple iPad 3 is the prize.

The day’s events are as follows:

• The 10k warm-up starts at 7:45 a.m.
• 10k race starts at 8 a.m.
• Warm up for 5k starts at 8:25 a.m.
• 5k race starts at 8:35 a.m.
• 1km fun run starts (strollers allowed)
