Abdul Latif, former president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association in Keighley, has died after a long battle against cancer. He was 90.

Mr Latif, of North Dean Road, Keighley, was born in Village Goi, Azad Kashmir, Pakistan.

In about 1936 he enlisted into the British Army in India and his regiment formed part of the 14th Army that conducted the Burma Campaign against the Japanese in 1942. He later joined the Pakistan army, and came third in its national shooting competition.

Mr Latif moved to the UK in 1962 to work in the textile industry and his wife and children joined him in Keighley 15 years later.

He was appointed the first president of the Keighley branch of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association.

Son Mujeeb Rahman said his father had been reluctant to take up the position due to a lack of knowledge about religious affairs, but was persuaded to do so by the hierarchy and began studying – reading more than 100 books.

“He imparted much of his knowledge to his children and grandchildren – always encouraging them to seek knowledge to the highest degree and urging them to take an interest in the affairs of the Ahmadiyya community as well as the wider community and State,” said Mujeeb.

Mr Latif was also well known for his charitable work and was central to a campaign to raise funds for a base for the local Ahmadiyya community.

A three-storey building was bought for around £375,000.

He was also a keen walker, covering five miles a day for many years.

His extended family was at his bedside when he died and in accordance with his wishes, Mr Latif was buried in Rabwah, Pakistan.
