Canada: Ahmadi Muslim volunteers explain Shari’a law

Rabbani promised that those attending the presentation, which has been given across the prairies, have come away with a different perspective of Islam.

CORNWALL — The Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth of Canada will be back in Cornwall with another talk this month, this time on Shari’a law.

The over 2,600 volunteers are part of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, a group of Muslims who reject terrorism and fanaticism, and are also focused on promoting humanitarian work.

They have taken their talks across the country, visiting Cornwall in January to share the history of Mother Mary from the Islamic perspective.

Their new topic of discussion is perhaps the most controversial, with Shari’a law often connected to mistreatment of women.

“This is the biggest challenge we are having because people have so many misconceptions of Shari’a law,” said Rizwan Rabbani, the national executive director.

“It’s not the people to blame, it’s the Muslims that have done such a bad job of explaining Shari’a law.”

The presentation is entitled “Shari’a, The misunderstood Islamic Law.”

Visitors can examine the displays and questions will be answered by knowledgeable volunteers.

Shari’a law is a religious law, Rabbani explained, meaning it shouldn’t be implemented on a state.

“No one wants to implement that religious law on the land,” he said. “You have so many people from different (religions).”

“It’s a religious law that protects religious rights,” he said.

“If you implement this law on the land, then you are taking away basic human rights from people,” Rabbani explained.

Rabbani promised that those attending the presentation, which has been given across the prairies, have come away with a different perspective of Islam.

“This is a plan to educate the public, to let them know that we are not trying to implement anything,” he said.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth of Canada also hope to get involved in local humanitarian work in the area.

The Cornwall presentation, the group’s 20th in two months, will take place April 22 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cornwall Public Library.
