Mr Samuel Boadu, Brong-Ahafo Regional Deputy Director of the Electoral Commission (EC) has advised Muslim youth not to allow themselves to be used to perpetuate acts of intolerance and violence.

He stressed the need for Muslim youth to “tolerate one another with different cultural backgrounds, religion, political affiliations and help to sustain peace”.

Mr Boadu made the remarks at the opening of the Brong-Ahafo 20th Annual Rally of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Organisation at Penkwase in Sunyani at the weekend.

The two-day programme is under the theme “Promotion of National Peace: The Role of the Muslim Youth in an election year”.

About 250 participants drawn form the region attended the programme.

The deputy regional EC director noted since the promulgation of the fourth Republican constitution, the nation had witnessed five major elections in respect of Presidential and Parliamentary elections interspersed with local government elections peacefully.

“This has positioned Ghana as one of the countries in Africa that the international community respects in terms of democratic governance”.

“The youth in Liberia, Somalia, Cote d’Ivoire, Kenya, Rwanda, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Nigeria and many more are either dead through intolerance in electoral violence, wars or have their political environment not stable and conducive to dream of their future aspirations”, he said.

Mr Boadu said the recent national biometric voters registration exercise ended with lots of intolerance, as people physically prevented others from registering as voters, with ‘macho-men’ intimidating applicants and registration officials at registrations centres.

He wondered why all those unfortunate events occurred “when the electoral regulations Constitutional Instrument (CI) 72 are clear and explicit on how the electoral regulations will check the registration process”.

Mr Yakubu Mubarak, Brong-Ahafo Regional President of the Organisation, reminded participants of the religious teaching of Islam, stating that “it is the collective discipline of all of us that enable people to judge the Islamic religion”.

Mr Mubarak expressed the hope the participants after the rally would act as “ambassadors of peace” or serve as role models to others”.

Mr Jamil Ibrahim Baidoo, National Vice-President of the Organisation, who presided over the function, gave assurance that the Ahmadiyya would continue to educate the youth and let understanding and tolerance reflect in their daily lives.

Present included Maulvi Mansroor Ahmed Zahid, Brong-Ahafo Regional Missionary of the Ahmadiyya Mission Ghana. GNA
