CHINO - The Islamic holy month of fasting, called Ramadhan, officially begins one hour and 20 minutes before sunrise on Saturday.
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community's Baitul Hameed Mosque at 11941 Ramona Ave., Chino, will host a full schedule of fasting-related events, including daily breaking of the fast just after sunset, followed at 8:30 p.m by Maghrib, the fourth of Islam's five daily prayers.
Shamshad Nasir, regional missionary and Imam at the Chino Mosque, said all practicing Muslims look forward to Ramadhan each year because it provides an opportunity to rededicate themselves to the Islamic faith and work on bettering themselves physically, morally and spiritually.
Nasir said fasting in Islam isn't only about not eating, although going hungry does generate empathy for those less fortunate who go hungry due to economic as opposed to religious reasons.
About 45 minutes before the sunset prayer, a lecture will be given from the Holy Quran and other source texts from Islam as well as the writings of the founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, and his spiritual successors.
Here is a list of daily evening prayers:
7 p.m. - third prayer, followed by the reading of the Holy Quarn and holy teaching
8 p.m. - break
8:10 p.m. - fourth prayer
8:30 p.m. - dinner
9 p.m. - last, fifth, prayer
Aug. 18 is the last day of fasting, Aug. 19 is Eidulfitr, ending of a month of fasting.
