AMRITSAR: She may not have got Indian nationality but she has learnt India's national language Hindi as well as Punjabi. Meet Pakistani bride Tahira Zahoor who was married to Maqbool Ahmad in 2003 and shifted to Qadian, headquarters of Ahmadiyya Muslim community, in Gurdaspur district from Faislabad in Pakistan.
For past 9 years, her Indian citizenship case is hanging fire in bureaucratic dithering but in her heart she has accepted India her country and have also learnt Hindi and Punjabi language so she could teach same to her three children even as she is not allowed to leave Qadian. Tahira has become the first Pakistani bride among nearly one dozen to have learnt both Hindi and Punjabi.
"Initially it was difficult to understand the script but my husband would translate it into Urdu and with time I started picking up language like a small children" said Tahira while talking to TOI on Wednesday.
Having good command over written and spoken Hindi, Tahira is now also practicing to learn to write and read Punjabi language. "Many billboards in market are written in Hindi and Punjabi and every time I had to ask someone to translate it for me but not any more now" she said.
Her husband Maqbool said he had purchased her basic Hindi and Punjabi learning books and she used to read Hindi and Punjabi newspapers to practice. "Now she even teaches Hindi to our daughter Shumaila Maqbool who is a 2nd class student " he said.
However Tahira regrets that despite completing all required formalities her citizenship case was still pending.Tahira's mother Nasira Begum told TOI over phone from Faisalabad that they were happy that their daughter had adopted Indian culture and have also learnt Hindi and Punjabi language. "I have asked her to write me a letter in Hindi with its interpretation in Urdu, I want to see how may daughter writes Hindi" she said.
Khurishada Rukkiyya, mother in law of Tahira said "It is a proud movement that my daughter in law have learnt my mother tongue". She said she would be able to teach her children in a better way after learning these two languages.
