Nathan Grindal just wanted to watch a game of darts.
But because of his flowing hair and full beard, the 33-year-old from the town of Abingdon became the focal point of the 4,500-person strong crowd at the Cash Converters Players Championships in Somerset, England, who collectively decided he looked like Jesus Christ. And (perhaps) fueled by the four-pint pitchers of beer they could buy at the event, they decided to let him know.
"Jesus! Jesus!" they chanted. It got so loud that security at the event (which, by the way, was being broadcast live in the U.K.) decided it might be best to escort Grindal out so he didn't become too much of a distraction to the players.
That's when the trouble started.
The departure led to a chant of "Stand up if you love Jesus!" The crowd grew unruly. Players were angry. Grindal was just sad. After all, he only wanted to watch darts.
"I didn't go to the darts dressed as Jesus — I went as me," he told The Sun. "It was all very weird and distressing. I didn't break down crying but I did get emotionally distraught. They were bullying me and picking on me, saying that I was someone else. It would have been okay if the security hadn't made a fuss getting me out of the arena."
The security team, not unsympathetic to his frustration, took him to a nearby bar where he could watch the match and even bought him a beer. When the match ended, people poured out of the arena and asked him to pose for pictures.
Not impressed was darts player Phil Taylor, who won the tournament by beating fellow finalist Kim Huybrechts in what's being called "legendary" fashion.
"In his post-match interview, Phil Taylor said something like, 'If I ever see Jesus again, I'll crucify him myself'," said Grindal. "Now that's just hurtful."
