Oh Canada, you have given us protection and you have earned our love. I came to Canada as a refugee because in Pakistan, this freedom had been snatched away from me.

Re: Opinion: An inclusive concept of religious freedom, The Gazette, Feb. 24.

I commend our government for choosing a mosque of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community to host the announcement of one of the nobler achievements of this administration.

In launching this office, Canada becomes only the second country to dedicate an official department of its government to advocate for the rights of the deprived.

Why? Because most countries on the map cannot even fathom this concept – how can they go abroad to canvass for the rights of religiously oppressed peoples when they are themselves tyrants in one form or another?

Oh Canada, you have given us protection and you have earned our love. I came to Canada as a refugee because in Pakistan, this freedom had been snatched away from me. But today, I find myself not among a caged minority, but among a majority, “strong and free” to openly believe in what I want. For this, I salute you Canada.
